The River Within Us:
Stories Inspired by the Waters Around Us
Phyllis Labanowski and Jane Beatrice Wegscheider collaborated on a project
to highlight our community’s changed relationship to the Deerfield River
after the devastation of flooding
caused by Tropical Storm Irene in 2011.
As part of that project, Phyllis and Jane collected over 75 stories, poems and reflections, which they transferred onto bottles, jars and jugs of river water, giving voice to our community’s grief and resilience.
Bottles were installed in six sites by the river in Shelburne Falls on the one year anniversary of the flood.
